Meet The Forum Team: Emily Hopkins
Emily Hopkins, YCEF’s new external engagement lead, is a first year MEM student at the Yale School of the Environment (YSE). Originally from Tennessee but having spent the last four years in Washington, DC, she brings a background in media relations and strategic communications, including four years at a think tank.
Emily is especially focused on using effective communication for complex scientific topics. Her specialization at YSE is in Water Resource Science and Management; she also has interests in the intersection of business and the environment and water and energy.
What brought you to water as a specialization?
I’ve always been drawn to water and the coast. My past work also exposed me to intersections among energy resources, national security, climate-driven disasters, and resilience. I’m especially interested in flood management and the security implications of water abundance or scarcity.
What has stood out about New Haven so far?
The New Haven MOD was a great way to get integrated into a community beyond Yale. Walking, biking, and kayaking throughout New Haven helped me feel oriented and comfortable exploring different parts of the city and gain a more holistic understanding of the community.
What interests you about science communication?
A major part of my previous role was coordinating interviews with and for experts, including on-camera interview trainings. Often, the challenge was helping highly technical knowledgeable experts communicate clearly without losing accuracy, making information understandable, persuasive, and relevant to people’s everyday lives.
Strong and informed communication creates more informed policy and conversations all around. I want to widen my understanding of scientific concepts so I can create more robust communication.
What is your favorite class so far?
U.S. Clean Water Policy. We’re looking closely at the Clean Water Act and other legislation, including how to make an economic case for clean water.
What do you enjoy outside school and work?
I love reading, running, and being outside. I’m currently reading Salt: A World History, which covers everything from religion to medicine and cooking. I also enjoy discovering new music, especially albums that work as a complete body of work.
What music are you excited about right now?
I like pop rock, indie rock, and country-adjacent music. This week, I’m excited about new releases from Miley Cyrus, Carly Rae Jepsen, Katie Pruitt, and Lizzie McAlpine.
