Matthew Sorge

I’m a Master of Environmental Management (MEM) student at the Yale School of the Environment (YSE). Originally from Greensboro, North Carolina and I hold a B.S. in International Agriculture and Rural Development from Cornell University.

Prior to coming to Yale, I worked on small-scale vegetable farms and conducted research on agricultural extension. Moreover, though the US State Department’s Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals fellowship, I spent a year studying and working in Germany. In Germany, I had the opportunity to take university courses, intern on a family farm, and become fluent in the language.

Here at YSE, I am diving into what the energy transition will mean for farmlands and rural communities. A lot of future renewable projects will be built on farmland—yet farmers are often divided on the issue. I expect to receive my masters in May 2026 and plan to work in the clean energy sector using policy and technological innovation to support de-carbonization targets. Ultimately, I hope to promote symbiosis between clean energy and regenerative agriculture.
